LUME

Industrial Design
Spring 2025, 3 Weeks

Tools: Lathe, Sewing Machine, Mahogany, Linen
Partner: Rowan DeJule

Inspired by constellations, Lume embodies the interplay between two contrasting materials: Mahogany wood and Linen fabric. The fabric gently wraps around the wood. It unfolds at the top, allowing light to emphasize the geometric contour.

Light seeps through openings on the body, creating constellations in the environment.

Initial Sketches

I ideated with the material constraints of Linen and Mahogany, and iterated various rotated forms with different proportions.

I found the incomplete elliptical design interesting and explored further iterations.

Prototypes

Created with pink foam and paper.

The Butterfly

We were intrigued by the paper’s elasticity and how the entire form changes as it is pressed and released.

Adjusting Modules

We noticed that Increasing the height of modules makes the form less abrasive and more approachable -- something to consider if the lamp is made adjustable.

Rethinking Material Constraints

Due to the weight of the wood, we modified the transforming concept the re-visualized the form.

Further Visualization

Sketched wood designs with regards to proportion, balance, and cohesiveness of form.
